The red grouper fishery is in its decline phase presenting an average annual catch of 8191 t during the 1999 to 2003 period. Through these years Cuban fleet has reduced its fishing area toward the oriental region of the Campeche Bank while the artisanal fleet extended, increasing the overlap of sizes catched by the arisanal-industrial and artisanal-cuban fleets. The size composition of the catch shows that most of the fishes are captured before first maturation size. First catch age is 2 years, and complete fishery recruitment is at age 3 (age of first maturation), this being a factor against fishing sustainability and forcing adoption of management strategies. The natural mortality is calculated (M) for the each age in the fishery by the function Y =...

Beyond Post-release Mortality: Inferences on Recovery Periods and Natural Mortality From Electronic Tagging Data for Discarded Lamnid Sharks ArchiMer
Bowlby, Heather D.; Benoît, Hugues P.; Joyce, Warren; Sulikowski, James; Coelho, Rui; Domingo, Andrés; Cortés, Enric; Hazin, Fabio; Macias, David; Biais, Gerard; Santos, Catarina; Anderson, Brooke.
Accurately characterizing the biology of a pelagic shark species is critical when assessing its status and resilience to fishing pressure. Natural mortality (M) is well known to be a key parameter determining productivity and resilience, but also one for which estimates are most uncertain. While M can be inferred from life history, validated direct estimates are extremely rare for sharks. Porbeagle (Lamna nasus) and shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) are presently overfished in the North Atlantic, but there are no directed fisheries and successful live release of bycatch is believed to have increased. Understanding M, post-release mortality (PRM), and variables that affect mortality are necessary for management and effective bycatch mitigation. From 177...

Garciarena, A.D.; Perrotta, R.G..
Length growth parameters were calculated and total length-weight and total length-fork length relationships, which showed no differences between sexes, were fitted for the South Atlantic bream (Seriolella porosa). Length at first maturity was also calculated. The results were as follows: L (mm)= 490.96k years-¹) = 0.154; t0 (years)= -3.915; W(g) = 4*10-6)*TL³.1989; FL(mm) = 0.8917*TL1.0006);L sub 50 (mm)= 290.61. Natural mortality was estimated at 0.274 and limit age at 11 years. Samples were taken during research surveys carried out in 1999 and 2000 in the Argentine Sea (Atlantic SW). Sagittae otoliths of 374 specimen were used for age determination. Total fish length ranged from 226 mm to 550 mm (1-14 years). Commercial landing data of trawl fleets for...

Comparative study on octopus vulgaris (cuvier, 1797) from the mediterranean and red sea coasts of egypt OceanDocs
Gabr, H.R.; Riad, R..
Specimens from common octopus, Octopus vulgaris captured from the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea showed significant differences in four of seven morphometric measurements .These differences are sufficient to recognize the populations of this species in the two habitats. The computed length-Wight relationship and condition factor for common octopus in both areas showed that representatives of this species from the Red Sea are heavier than those captured from the Mediterranean Sea for the same length group. Moreover, the natural mortality coefficient of Mediterranean representatives was comparatively higher than for the Red Sea octopus. This shows that the environmental conditions in the Red Sea are more suitable for O. vulgaris than in the Mediterranean Sea.

OceanDocs
Pájaro, M..
Cannibalism is not an abnormal behaviour and it can be observed in a wide number of animals. In Pisces, cannibalism may be the result of endogenous intraspecific factors (nutritional state, size, age, state of development) or exogenous intraspecific factors (food, density, light). Nevertheless, external fertilization and the high fecundity of teleost fish tend to increase egg cannibalism, in particular among filter feeding fishes such as anchovies. In the present work, two important Argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita stocks were studied. The first is to the north of 41°S, and spawns during spring on the coastal and shelf waters of Buenos Aires Province,Argentina, and Uruguay. The second one inhabits the Patagonian region, from 41°S to 47°S. It spawns...

Investigating the performances of a bayesian biomass dynamic model with informative priors on Atlantic bluefin tuna ArchiMer
Simon, M; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Gaertner, Daniel; Etienne, Marie-pierre.
We examined the possibility of eliciting informative priors for the parameters of a biomass production model with emphasis on the intrinsic population growth rate of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus). We reviewed the literature to propose probability distribution functions for the vital rates and used a matrix population model structured by age (Leslie) to compute the population growth rate. A generalized biomass production model is applied on two CPUE and catch datasets (1976-1996 and 1976-2006) using informative priors. The population growth rate prior has a diffuse distribution and is very sensitive to young of the year mortality rate. Thus, we compared the performances of this prior with a commonly used prior for tunas population growth rate. We...

Pope's Cohorts Analysis was modified to extend its application to a wider range of natural mortality, M and fishing mortality, F rate values. The modified method maintains the simplicity of the one established by Pope and does not require to resolve any non lineal equation in each cohort reconstruction process. The relative errors obtained when estimating the number of individuals per age (maximum and mean in absolute value) showed acceptable levels within the five domains (M and F pairs of values) analyzed in this work. The new method can be adapted to a particular situation (M and F values range) simply solving an optimization problem (minimization of the maximum relative error absolute value) easily achieved using a calculation sheet or considering the...

The occurrence of gurnard Prionotus stephanophrys was studied in the course of a series of fisheries research cruises on the Ecuadorian continental shelf between 1980 and 1985. The species is common in coastal waters south of 1°S . Its abundance is very variable, possibly associated with sea temperatures. Normally densities are between 0.8 and 1.6 t.km-2. The standing stock varies between 13,000 and 150,000 t wich it is estimated can sustain catches of around 4,000 t pet year, and up to 40,000 t in times of great abundance. P. stephanophyrs is found in large shoals on the bottom during the day but a night moves up into mid-water to feed on euphausids. The fish caught had size range of 12 cm to 37 cm, but the majority were between 16 cm and 21 cm in total...

Hansen, J.E..
The aim of this paper was to accurately estimate population parameters of northern (“bonaerensis”, latitude < 41° S) and southern (“patagonic”, latitude 41° S) Argentine anchovy stocks and to describe some aspects of their behaviour. The research surveys allowed to obtain data on length, total weight, sex, maturity and age of 27,853 specimens of the northern and 12,787 of the southern stocks. Besides, 20,717 age determinations stemmed from commercial landing samplings of the northern stock were established. Sex proportion in the northern population was 0.50 : 0.50; the southern showed a slight predominance of males (0.52 : 0.48). Data derived from cruises and commercial landings showed statistical differences in the growth ratio of the northern stock...

The life history of Chondrichthyans results in a low capacity to recover from the fishery human impact, Mustelus schmitti is the most landing shark in Argentina (SW Atlantic)where reductions in the abundance have been detected. The sustainability of M. schmitti to exploitation using a demographic analysis, was examined. The intrinsic rate of population increase (r)and extinction risk under several harvesting strategies were estimated. For this purpose a stage-structured female-only matrix model was applied, considering the mortality and reproductive parameters to each stage. The estimate of length at maturity from the logistic curve was 56.04 cm. The fertility per female ranged between 1 and 15 pups and it was increased with total length. The Mortality...

Variabilidad Temporal De Los Parámetros Poblacionales De La Langosta Espinosa Del Caribe [Panulirus argus] (Latreille, 1804) En Aguas De Cuba OceanDocs
de León González, María Estela.
ABSTRACT Temporal variability in the population parameters of the Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus (Latreille, 1804) in Cuban waters Modifications in life-history traits are often concomitant with prolonged periods of exploitation or changes in the environment, producing changes in population abundance. . Both of them act as selective forces and could affect population parameters behaviour like growth rate, reproduction output, natural mortality rate and size at first maturity. Because of the economic importance of Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) for Cuba and other countries of western central Atlantic, it is necessary to make a careful study in its life cycle processes and changes happened in temporal scale. Data used were obtained from...
